At the Passing of Vivian Dake

A poem written by Rev. S.K.Wheatlake in 1892, in memory of Rev. Vivian Dake, who died while serving in Africa. It seems a great poem to be read at the untimely passing of anyone serving the Kingdom of Jesus…

He fainted on the battlefield,
Secure behind Faith’s trusty shield;
With Armor on the warrior fail,
Unsmitten by the darts of hell.

He fell beneath meridian sun,
At noon a full days work was done.
No more he treads the battleground,
No more the cross – he wears the crown.

No more he’ll join us in the fight
Against the wrong for God and right.
Close up the breach in which he stood,
Be bold to strike or die for God.

Oft we were blessed, ‘mid battle roar,
To hear him shout his victories o‘er,
And when his sword flashed forth the light,
We waxed more valiant in the fight.

Gird up your loins. No longer weep.
God giveth His beloved sleep.
Soon far beyond the battle fray,
We’ll meet on coronation day.

But Hark! Hear ye that battle cry,
Stand firm, the hellish foe is nigh;
With Spirit’s sword and victor’s song,
Quit you like men. In God be strong.

Ephesians 2:11-22

A member of uncircumcision
I was not first aware of Your plans
Yet You have made me one of Your own
By the scars in Your feet and Your hands

One humanity You’ve knit together
One tribe of the two or the many
Yet we often declare our differences
When You have said “there aren’t any”

We are all in need of Your healing
Of Your mercy and Grace we desire
With hearts that are wounded and hardened
We come needing Your Spirits’ fire

You have melted down all our hostility
Any reason for shame is destroyed
Your presence is now something we can pursue
Instead of needing to avoid

We pursue as One body together
Discovering You already here
I pray that Your Lordship and presence
Through my life today are made clear

Use all that I am for my neighbors
Those feeling like aliens and stranger
Fill me with Your reconciling Love
As revealed when You came in a manger

Mark 4:26-34

Lord, of Your Kingdom, You invite
Us to join You in harvest and sowing
You empower my life to join You today
You nurture the seeds I am throwing

Guide me in each seeded moment
May Your Love triumph over all others
May the world notice all You reveal
And worship at what they discover

May I humbly approach each moment
Whether mine is to harvest or till
May I always receive Your direction
And seek not mine, but Your will

If I find a great place to be planting
If I notice some fruit on the vine
May I always be quick to give glory
To Your Labor and Love, not to mine

Lord, I’m thankful at some earlier moment
You saw the soil of my life
You saw potential for nurturing seeds
Planting Your Love in all my strife

You’ve saved me and brought me Your healing
From seeds that by others You’d sown
I join You today, as mere mustard seed
Knowing from it grows Kingdom and Throne
