Genesis 4:1-16

When Eve knew Adam
She bore him a son
They produced a man
In a world undone

The boys were alive
As seen with the eyes
But as we read Genesis
We realize

That Adam & Eve both died in the garden
And death was their product of choice
So it shouldn’t surprise us to hear from Cain
And hear such a thing in his voice

“But they didn’t die”, an easy response
They simply were given consequence
They sewed their own clothes &
Had to live on the other side of the fence.

To our ways of measuring they seem alive
A problem we still face today
We nod at our abilities when we seem blessed
Never mind that we make our own way

Our own way is death
His Word reveals
Even though heartbeats & breath
Seem to easily conceal

Some people ask how we filled the world
From only one family at start
I think there’s a more significant question
One that begins in our hearts

The right question isn’t “how’d so many
Come from two original brothers?”
Rather- how’d we grow at all
with a nature
Of killing each other?

1 Kings 19:1-8

I wonder if Elijah asked for some space
As he left his poor servant alone.
He wandered forward to the broom tree
And asked God to just take him home.

Discouraged at living a life on the run
He found all he needed in shade from the sun.

I wonder if the servant ever would hear
Just what had happened when angels came near
How God looked with pity on Elijah’s poor state
How when he came empty, God filled his plate.

I wonder if Elijah, filled with despair
Released his own servant, who hadn’t a care
Was it for his safety,
that he was released?
Surely he’d have stayed
If aware of the feast.
A cake made by angels
Deserving of praise
For on it, Elijah
Survived 40 days.

Isaiah 58:1-12

We pray for light in darkness
For quenching dry, parched lands
On behalf of future generations
As if we are unable to play a hand

We are desperate for something
We will gather in arenas
We raise our hands in colored lights
And wonder if God’s seen us

We’ll turn up all the volume
And follow influencers
We will even turn off everything
As if silence gives us answers

Meanwhile God has spoken
And must wonder if we’ve heard
Or if we’d simply prefer
He’d given different Word

He says to end oppression
And every form of yoke
He will unleash streams of blessing
As chains of poverty are broke

If we go out and feed the hungry
Bring the homeless into ours
Clothe those who are uncovered
Trusting He will water our flowers

It’s good to pray for movement
His Lordship He wants to prove
But remember in our praying
He’s empowered us to move
