Ireland: Day 2

Our first day, contented to wander
Discovering where we had come
Our bodies still moored to a city
6 hours behind, by the sun

We soaked up the beauty of family
We saw the hung nets by the sea
Awakened by salt water breezes
We knew this was where we should be

We gazed on their rich filleted plunder
We petted their lobster with smile
We laughed, though our eyes betrayed us
More tired with each traveled mile

We slept, oh the wonderful mercy
Of place to lay down in exhaust
The sweet relief of bidding evening
Was worth any payment or cost

We dreamed of potentials and maybes
While birds of the coast flew nearby
They entered our dreams uninvited
As through windows we heard their cry

Ireland: Day 1

Recently, our family was able to visit Ireland. We had flight credit left over from when flights were cancelled, and we lived in Hungary due to the global pandemic. Combine that with a brother who lives in Dublin for a few years, and it meant we really needed to go! (Free flights & free lodging = Yes, please!)

It was awesome (full stop). So much could be said, but I will summarize each day with a poem and a single picture. Here’s Day 1 (It gets better, promise)…

All packed for a family vacation
(Though down one, we missed while at camp)
Embarking to Emerald Island
Sending ourselves instead of a stamp

Reminded at every terminal
Of two centuries and a half
Examined and prodded with smiling critique
By well-mannered airport-ish staff

Very soon, the strong winged portal
Will whisk us to our destination
Like ancient magic, our family moves
With speed and yet still limitation

They say to us, “Buckle for safety”
When turbulent winds may appear
What do they think we’ve been doing
Each moment of our journey here?

Relinquishing all control fully
We go where we all will be taken
Landing on waking, in Dublin
Unless our pilot is mistaken

a reminder.

I could list reasons.  I could research, and post links to articles about the impact of nature on the human brain.  The dangers of living at the pace our world runs.  The need to reduce “screen time”.  The need to retreat from the noises of city.  The need to be reminded of natural beauty, over the manufactured beauty we’re sold daily.  Instead, I just want to whet your appetite, and remind you that your family needs some of this.  Ours did too.  This all took place in less than 24 hours, for less than 50 bucks.  Worth it.
