Okay, here comes an experiment a while in the making. Once in a while I try to read some of the other awesome parenting blogs that are out there (linked on the side below). So many crazy awesome writers and parents are out there. Many of them have been doing this thing called “Five Minute Friday’s” for a while now. I figured I would take a stab at it. They give a prompt, and the rules of writing in this case are: you write for five minutes flat on the topic…..no editing, and done after 5. So without further adieu…my “FMF”:
____________
VOICE
I remember back in middle school, I auditioned and was chosen for the lead role in an opera for our community theater. It was called “Amahl & The Night Visitors”. I had no idea what it was about at first, but quickly learned it was, in fact, the story of Christmas told from the view of a beggar-child of a village the Wise Men traveled through on their way to see Jesus. What stands out about my performance – is that I sang soprano. Not just “really really high tenor” either….it was flat out ridiculously high soprano. Reminder: I was a middle school boy.
Needless to say, I’m glad some things have changed about my voice. I’m also glad my vocal chords aren’t the only thing that has changed in regard to my “voice”.
I’m a talkative person. It never takes me long to feel comfortable enough to speak in a crowd of people. That wasn’t always me, but late in high school, and definitely through college – I could fill silence pretty swiftly. That was my voice, and I enjoyed being heard. Then I met a woman (and through her in many ways, a renewed Jesus) who reminded me that Jesus called us to make room for those who weren’t quite so comfortable speaking.
I’m 31 years old now…far beyond my middle school days. We’ve been married almost 10 years now, and she continues to remind me – shhhhh. You don’t always need to be the voice.
I’m thankful for marrying someone who helps me hear His voice. 🙂
______________
Phew….that was hard. There were many times I wanted to stop, rewrite, go back and change/expand/etc. I’m impressed by so many of the “FMF” posts I’ve read that seem pretty long. I’m a slow thinker when I write…apparently much slower than when I speak. 🙂
A fun experience. 🙂 Thanks to the group for letting a boy give his two cents through FMF. 🙂
Wow! You did great! (you should have read my first attempt at this…wait. don’t go looking for it) : )
I laughed, I tilted my head and nodded a lot. And at the end, I wanted to give your wife a hug … for helping you hear the voice the matters most.
Great write, Wick!
Haha….thanks!!! I still feel like I’ve somehow snuck into a women’s writing club. But so far I’ve not gotten shown the door. Whew.
Nice post! Sounds like you have found your voice! (Brave man… good to see a guy in our midst!) Sounds like you have found yourself an amazing wife as well! Welcome!
Thanks so much! And yes, definitely. 🙂
You did great for your first time, and I do hope you will come back as the Lord allows and link up again! For so many years I was afraid to sing in front of people because I am not naturally gifted. I have to work at it, remember to pull that tummy in, breath correctly, etc. I now sing in the house of prayer, among very talented singers, and don’t even care if I go off key. All for the glory of God! Thankful to have met you today!
Thanks for reading! I’m with you, gotta love just letting the voice go when singing, with a giant goofy grin on my face!
Great job! Nice to have you join us.
Thanks so much for having me!!!
Great post.
Thanks for reading!! 🙂
Your moment of bravery paid off! Thanks for sharing with the FMF crew – I found FMF through a friend about 2 months ago, and it’s fun to have a blog post that is completely unplanned and unscripted.
Thanks Jenni! It definitely looks like something I’ll be continuing to experiment with! 🙂
So glad to have you join us for FMF friend! How wonderful it is to have a spouse that balances us. Looking forward to reading more from you! Blessings to you and your wife!
Thanks Wendy! Blessings to you as well, and I look forward to more FMF for sure! 🙂
