John 20:1-18

Mary didn’t come praying
“Jesus, please be resurrected.”
She had no way of understanding
What was to be expected

Sometimes we think God requires prayer
That understands out of thin air
What to ask for, and when to say
Exactly what He’d want today.

The mystery of the empty tomb
A hope for which they’d not given much room
The disciples returned to where they lived
While Mary had more grief to give.

Two angels first appeared within
And asked her why she wept
“They have taken my Lord away
And now I’m unsure where He’s kept.”

Then the gardener from outside
Smiled and asked the same
She was overwhelmed and smiling wide
As soon as He said her name

It was no gardener standing there
In physical body appeared
It was Jesus, resurrected
Saying “do not hold me here”.”

“I didn’t return to stay forever
But to tell you I must go,
But tell the brothers I will ascend
And I’m here so you will know.”

So Mary went to share the news
Soon as the disciples she did reach
(Which lays a pretty good foundation
For all women called to preach.)

Jesus, resurrected Lord
Firstborn of New Creation
Reveals to us the Father’s Power
And offers us His Salvation…

Lamentations 3:55-66

Just in case we might forget
Or think our suffering unique
God has included in His Word
More than just a peek

A look into the sufferings
His people have endured
And all the times He’s come back
And helped them feel assured

Not that He would swoop in
And end their situation
(Although sometimes that’s what He did
For both individuals and nations.)

But there are many other times
The words that we now read
Were written by those for whom it seems
God didn’t intercede

It’s good for us to remember
God’s faithfulness remains
Even if the road we’re on
Doesn’t seem to change

God reveals in Jesus
A reality yet unseen
The place that helps us understand
What our reality means.

A more foundational dimension
Where God exists complete
Where Jesus is Lord over all things
And there’s no enemy to defeat.

The crazy thing about it as
We wait for such a reality to come near
The good news proclaimed by Jesus
Is that it is already here!

Will we help reveal it
Or will we get distracted?
That’s why each Sunday we remember
The resurrection He enacted

A Million Dreams…(no spoilers)

As we continue in celebrating the Easter season – it’s great for us to be on the look-out for echoes of New Creation, creativity, and resurrection life.  Recently I found God winking at us through the soundtrack of “The Greatest Showman”, and it made me smile big enough I wanted to share it.

No spoilers here, but there’s a song called “A Million Dreams” that begins with a young BT Barnum, and transitions into him as a man.  He’s singing about his dreams, specifically to a girl who makes his heart race.  As the words began to come, I immediately thought of a young Jesus who had dreams for what Love, forgiveness, and mercy could do to transform our world, as he studied the Torah.  The song takes on even more depth and beauty as the transition happens into him as an adult, and especially as the woman joins in.  Here we have a beautiful metaphor in song – Christ singing invitationally to His bride (the church), and she asking to be a part of what He’s launching into….

This points us with goosebumps toward a New Creation that will blow us away….and we get to join in those dreams becoming flesh today…as we choose to turn away from the systems, powers, & self-centeredness of our world….as individuals, as families, as communities….for the Loving ways of New Creation… (Revelation 21:5….”Look!! I’m making all things NEW!”)   It may cost us everything, but we may gain even more…
