Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7

It wasn’t a magic
apple or pear
That made Eve and Adam
even more aware

Aware that their status
was less than divine
A choice that brought death
To theirs, yours, and mine.

The choice was not simply
To chew and to swallow
The choice was to lead
Instead of to follow

To say “we know better”
When God gives a way
It’s a choice that still
Looks tempting today.

A choice to serve self
Over loving others
To see enemies
In our sisters and brothers

To live lives divided
Apart and alone
To deny that Jesus
Has taken the throne

By giving himself over
To the worst of our choosing
He won the battle
We were already losing

We’ve been set free
Reconciled to Love
No longer burdened
With “doing/being enough”

We are less than divine
That’s Grace Freely given
As His Love brings life
To we, who weren’t living.

Isaiah 58:1-12

We pray for light in darkness
For quenching dry, parched lands
On behalf of future generations
As if we are unable to play a hand

We are desperate for something
We will gather in arenas
We raise our hands in colored lights
And wonder if God’s seen us

We’ll turn up all the volume
And follow influencers
We will even turn off everything
As if silence gives us answers

Meanwhile God has spoken
And must wonder if we’ve heard
Or if we’d simply prefer
He’d given different Word

He says to end oppression
And every form of yoke
He will unleash streams of blessing
As chains of poverty are broke

If we go out and feed the hungry
Bring the homeless into ours
Clothe those who are uncovered
Trusting He will water our flowers

It’s good to pray for movement
His Lordship He wants to prove
But remember in our praying
He’s empowered us to move

Jonah 3:1-10

Why don’t we celebrate
That Nineveh turned?
When they turned around
As Gods’ anger burned?

We focus on Jonah
As he wants to run
How God sends a fish
And Jonah’s undone.

It’s told from his vantage
And so I suppose
It makes sense that this
Is how the story goes.

But what if we had
Ninevehs side?
When an entire community
Let go of their pride?

When a leader removed
His status and silence,
And called all who lived
To turn away from their violence

To repent from their ways
To hunger and thirst
God saw them sincere
And removed His own curse

A story of grace
A kingdom set free
A celebration of God
Where once wouldn’t be.

So as Jonah pouts
Look back to the King
And ask God how you
Might lead such a thing…
